The Quilting Has Begun

Now that I have the quilt sandwich all pin-basted, I'm ready for quilting this baby.  I have my sewing tables and machine set up...

I've practiced with thread...

I've chosen the motif for the alternating block...

Reduced it to fit...

Made my paper templates to guide me...(I trace the design on the paper, then stitch without thread to punch holes through several layers of paper.  Pin the paper to the block and stitch following the needle punch dots.)  I'm using paper for this design and block because I want it to be centered and evenly spaced and I'm not that good with free-motion for a design like this.  So this is my controlled-motion quilting!

Stitched the first block...stitched in the ditch and then the motif.

There's a few little wobbles, ran out of bobbin (ugh, I hate that!).  I may end up redoing this one; it bugs me too much.  I'll see how the others turn out.  I know it will look better when it's all done and washed.  As Tony says, the wobbles show that it is not some computer generated soulless quilt!  Now, only 23 of these blocks to go!

  1. thanks for describing how you do your templates. I have not tried this yet, and was not sure how to get them even. Maybe I will get brave and give it a try!

  2. I like that 'computer generated soulless quilt'! That sums it up perfectly! Don't worry about the little wobbles; you'll never see them once they it's finished and washed!

  3. The main thing I don't like about this one is when I put in a new bobbin, I forgot to match the colors of the new thread stitches to what I had already stitched. I'm using a varigated thread so the thread change shows because I didn't match it up. Plus the wobbles irritate me. I have unsewn it and resewn it and it looks much better. I'm very pleased with it now.

  6. Would love to try this....something new for me. I admit though, that trying free motion scares me!!
